New Vaccine Prevnar 13

Wednesday, May 05, 2010

Dear Parents,

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently licensed a new vaccine, Prevnar 13, against additional strains of the potentially invasive bacteria Streptococcus Pneumonia. This vaccine will replace the older Pneumoccocal vaccine that was given to children during the first 18 months of life.

Because it adds to protection against this problematic bacteria (one of the germs most commonly associated with ear infections and often resistant to antibiotics), the FDA and American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children under 5 years of age be given a “booster” shot to expand their immunity against additional strains. This vaccine is an accepted standard of care. Please check with your insurance company regarding their payment policy.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask your nurse or provider.
